Beware the Weekend Irish

Ray Murphy and Kyf Brewer

So considering all the times I've mentioned the Irish festivals, I have never actually established that I am Irish. Which I am, kind of. I go for the music more than the culture, and I go for the Rovers more than - well, basically I go for the Rovers.

It's pretty rare that I take the time to really listen to and enjoy the other bands. I usually let them fall to the background of the sound of my beer glass getting refilled.

The MD Irish Festival is a big one - lots of vendors, lots of bands, lots of beer (good kinds too, not lame Miller Lite). We got there a few hours before the Rovers played, which was enough for us but in no way enough to see everything that was going on. Friday they played before the closing band, Barleyjuice, and Saturday the bands switched so that the Rovers closed.

And you know what? Barleyjuice was a hysterically fun band that I loved watching. So, guys, I'm blogging about an Irish band besides the Rovers. Alert the Press.

Barleyjuice is a very bold band because of the type of songs they play, their unique nuances on traditional songs, their original music, and their stage presence which is full of head-banging and delightfully tight pants. What drew me in originally was the fact that they have a song called "Potatoes," which is a basically a Potato Famine joke in ditty format. And this was an Irish festival.

No way they can top that, right?

Yeah, no. The next song was called "Love With a Priest" - awkward and... well, saying anymore will ruin the punch line. Basically, Barleyjuice is the band that makes the jokes you wish you could make. They are terrible in the best way possible, which explains why their fans boo instead of cheer.

Barleyjuice, above all other Irish bands I've heard to date, musically invite everyone and anyone to what could be considered a bit of a close-knit community. I don't see why anyone could resist joining the "Weekend Irish" when it's just so much fun to do so!

[The Rovers are now known as Dublin 5 and can be found here.]
